Fidel Castro: Prime Minister of Cuba On the Mound and at Bat. Vintage Original Newswire Photos from 1966, Rare (1926-2016) Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959-1976 and President from 1976-2008. 1.) Cuba's infamous pitcher--turned-revolutionary leader, never got his shot at the big-leagues. Most stories of his try-outs with American teams have been debunked or even that he was a star pitcher in college. But certainly he had an affinity for the game as these photos prove. 1.) Sepia tinted double weight 11 x 5½" photo from Bohemia Magazine's archive reprinted for a 1988 issue with red crop marks visible. Dated 1966 of Castro on the mound during the National Amateur Baseball Series in Havana. 2.) Second image from the same amateur series, from UPI London Office dated 1966 with a great shot of the crowd, people on the field and at photo's edge a newsreel camera. Castro is head to toe in his signature olive fatigues. Estimated Value $400 - UP

Harold Reynolds, Seattle Mariners "Harold Reynolds, John 14:6" signed on an oversized framed poster photo Running To Make a Difference 21 x 17" boldly signed. 3.) Ozzie Smith St. Louis Cardinals, on photo is affixes how the signature came to be. Three Multi-Signed Baseballs: Team Balls 1967 Yankees, 1973 Cincinnati Reds (NL West Champions) and MLB Hall of Famers. 1.) Baseball signed by six (6) Hall of Famers between 1984-1990. They are Whitey Ford, Stan Musial, Buck Leonard, Ralph Kiner and Willie Stargell which have all been authenticated by JSA. Above Buck Leonard's autograph is Mickey Mantle which failed JSA's authentication process.
2.) 1973 Cincinnati Reds team signed ball consisting of nine (9) signatures including a truly bold Johnny Bench (Hall of Fame) Pete Rose, Richie Scheinblum and Ed Sprague. 3.)Team signed ball that James Spence Authentication assisted in vetting. 18 of the signatures are true and include Bill Robinson, Elston Howard, Mel Stottlemyre, Jake Gibbs and Al Downing. Also included are two clubhouse signatures or "ghost signing", a non-malicious ritual which are Mickey Mantle and Joe Pepitone. HOF and Red balls in overall excellent condition, Yankee ball legible but faint. Each ball comes with comprehensive Letter of Authenticity from James Spence. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Babe Ruth: Clubhouse Version / Non-Malicious Secretarial Signature ca. 1930 on Hand Illustrated Cover. Hand painted cover entitled "King of Swat" that was sent to Babe Ruth requesting an autograph, but as outlined by James Spence, autograph is a non-malicious, vintage secretarial (or wife) or clubhouse version. Collector solicited autographs between 1929-1931 and thus far this is the only autograph of all the hand painted covers he created, that has been graded with a caveat. Baseball Notables: J.L. Pepper Martin (St. Louis Cardinals) Judge Landis (First Commissioner of Baseball) DeWolf Hopper (Casey at the Bat). Three notables of baseball, scarce autographs: 1.)Pepper Martin (1904-1965) enjoyed a full career with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1930s and early 1940s. He was best known for his heroics during the 1931 World Series, in which he was the catalyst in a Cardinals' upset victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Signed, hand painted cover by the autograph collector himself whose collection can be found throughout this auction. Postmarked Oct 17, 1931. 2.) Kenesaw Mountain "Judge" Landis (1866-1944) Signed hand illustrated cover as the "Czar of Baseball" Landis was the first Commissioner of Baseball (1920-1944) during which the notorious Black Sox Scandal was discovered, the expulsion of 8 players (Eight Men Out) and the subsequent trial. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1944 Landis has boldly signed the note card. 3.) DeWolf Hopper (1858-1935), actor, singer, producer and nationally well known for his baseball fanaticism is immortalized for his performance of the poem "Casey at the Bat" and was often called upon to give his colorful, melodramatic recitation, which he did about 10,000 times in his booming voice, reciting it during performances and as part of curtain calls. All autographs and covers in near to mint condition. Landis and DeWolf quite scarce. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Joe DiMaggio: Superb Signed Color Photo in Yankees Uniform, LOA by James Spence Authentication (1914-1999) Legendary Hall of Famer (1955) considered one of the greatest baseball players, most especially batting, to this day still holding the record for his 56 game hitting streak. A New York Yankee from 1936-1951, he is also well known to his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, then at the time of his death arranged her funeral and paid for fresh roses to be in front of her crypt, three times a week, for 20 year. 8x10" Kodak Color photo boldly signed in fine point fiber tip marker and in near to mint condition. Mickey Mantle Signed 1964 Topps "Giant" Trading Card #25, Superior Condition and Very Prized, JSA Certification (1931-1995) Mantle played his entire Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees and considered one of the all-time all around great players of the game. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974. 1956 was his greatest year leading in batting average (.353), home runs (52), and runs batted in (RBI) (130), the "triple crown". Mantle also rode the wave of the exploding sports memorabilia craze beginning in the 1980s which afforded him a fine living. Offered is an oversized Topps "Giant" trading card from 1964 in excellent condition and add to that an exceptionally bold signature by Mantle in black felt marker. 5¼ x 3¼" and comes with a full Letter of Authenticity by James Spence Authentication. Yogi Berra (1925-2015) one of the greatest catchers the world of baseball has ever seen, a beloved New York Yankee, inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 1972, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously and famously known for his impromptu pithy comments, malapropisms, and seemingly unintentional wit called Yogi-isms. Excellent signed ball in blue ball point pen. 2.) Ted Williams (1918-2002) 19 years with the Boston Red Sox, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and one of the most recognizable names in baseball for three generations. Exceptionally bold signature in black marker with COA sticker and card from JSA. 3) Stan Musial (1920-2013) enjoyed 22 seasons of Major League Baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals and is still considered one of the greatest and most consistent hitters in history. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance 1909-11 T206 Baseball Cards of Chicago Cubs Greats Made Infamous by Poem. All Three HOF. 1909-1911 T20s cards all with Sweet Corporal Cigarettes of the three Chicago players who were immortalized in a poem by Franklin Pierce Adams in a refrain "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a sad stanza in that their play is from the point of view of NY Giants fan. These three players helped the Cubs win four National League championships and two World Series from 1906 to 1910. Cards are ungraded so view photo carefully. All three have centering issues, on has a rounded corner, but otherwise very presentable and this particular trio look great framed together in a presentation. Would grade 3 or better. Lou Gehrig: 185 First Day of Issue 25¢ Commemorative Stamp On Diverse Covers, Many Miniature Works of Art. On July 10, 1989, the US Postal Service issued a beautiful Lou Gehrig featuring an excellent photogravure portrait as part of their American Sports Series. The great majority of the covers have Cooperstown, New York postmarks, the city where the stamp was officially issued. But this collection impresses with the diversity of cachets, illustrations either printed, "silk" portraits or best, hand painted tributes. 24 covers are the very appealing silk cachets all with Gehrig stamp but the covers also have generic baseball themes. There are 130 printed covers with superb photos of Gehrig, a great number playing ball, his accomplishments, older posters and the like. Of those 130 printed covers 60 have affixed stamps centered on covers from Grenada's U.S. Baseball Series 1 issued in 1988 which are most definitely collectible ranging in prices from $3 to some exceeding $20
What stands out are the 26 hand painted cachets, most extremely accomplished and appealing. Most are beautiful caricatures and portraits of Gehrig and moments in his life. Outstanding collection.

Babe Ruth: 208 First Day of Issue 20¢ Commemorative Stamps on Striking and Diverse Covers, Many Miniature Original Works of Art. On July 6, 1983, the US Postal Service issued one of their most collected stamps featuring an excellent engraving of Babe Ruth at bat. It was issued in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of baseball's All-Star Game, this stamp honored Ruth who played in the first All-Star Game, in 1933. The great majority of the covers have Chicago, Illinois postmarks, the city where the stamp was officially issued.
But this collection impresses with the diversity of cachets, illustrations either printed, "silk" portraits or best, hand painted tributes. Over 40 covers are the very appealing silk cachets (very few duplicates) with Babe Ruth at bat, standing, full swing, signing autographs to kids, one even shooting pool. There are 140 printed covers with superb photos of Ruth, Yankee Stadium, a great number playing ball, news headlines and the like with several examples closer to engravings; the quality exceptional. The best by far are the 27 hand painted cachets, most extremely accomplished and appealing. Covers painted by well known illustrators such as Skat, Slyter, Klaus and Karen are nicely represented here all honoring Ruth with their artistry. Outstanding collection.

Sandy Koufax Signed LA Dodgers Baseball Jersey Embroidered with Career Achievements, Cooperstown Collection Edition 2/10 (1935) Sanford "Sandy" Koufax, beloved left-handed pitcher who pitched 12 seasons for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers from 1955 to 1966. Koufax, at age 36 in 1972, became the youngest player ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and the first to win three Cy Young Awards. Koufax is also well remembered as one of the outstanding Jewish athletes of all time in American sports. His decision not to pitch Game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur was covered throughout the world as an example of conflict between professional pressures and personal beliefs.
